Summer Internship Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How long is the summer internship? How many hours required to work?
    The summer internship is a 10 week, 40 hour-per-week internship.
  2. I am not in graduate school; may I still apply for summer internship?
    The summer internship is exclusive for graduate students in schools of public, behavioral and allied health.
  3. I am a former fellow that participated in the CSAP Prevention Fellowship Program; can I apply to summer internship program?
    Former fellows may participate in summer internship program; however, they also are required to be a current graduate student. Unlike the fellowship, there is no option for renewal after the 10-week training concludes.
  4. Is this a paid internship? What is the salary?
    Interns will receive a stipend of $15 per hour and will be required to work 40 hours per week for 10 weeks from June 11 - August 17, 2012. They will not be provided with insurance, travel, lodging, per diem allowances, or conference registration reimbursement.
  5. What are some of the responsibilities for interns?
    An intern's responsibilities may include designing, coordinating, implementing, or assessing the performance of substance abuse prevention programs. The work may include developing prevention plans to increase substance abuse awareness; developing prevention education programs; organizing and participating in trainings for staff or other organizations; and preparing and maintaining reports, records, and documents pertaining to funding sources, data collection, and program evaluation.
  6. Do I need to be enrolled in graduate school when I apply for the internship or enrolled throughout the time I am an intern?
    Applicants will need to be currently enrolled in graduate school. If you are a new graduate student, you will need to supply your letter of acceptance with your application. Current graduate student graduating will need to notify us at the beginning of the program.
  7. What States and/or national organizations will be eligible to participate in internship?
    For the 2012 summer internship, selected interns will be placed at participating Strategic Prevention Framework – Tribal Incentive Grant locations and Tribal Organizations throughout the United States. Please refer to the Home tab for a list of participating locations.
  8. How many applicants are selected to participate in summer internship?
    There are eight (8) internship positions available.
  9. What skills do I obtain from participating in Prevention Fellowship Program?
    In addition to building competencies in diverse areas of public, behavioral, and allied health practice, interns have opportunities to develop critical research, evaluation, epidemiology, writing, and presentation skills within a structured training program.
  10. I live in a State which is not participating in program, may I still apply?
    Yes. Applicants may apply to any location to participate in the summer internship.
  11. Do you provide moving expenses should I decide to relocate to participate in program?
    Selected interns will be responsible for moving expenses if he or she decides relocate to participate in the summer internship.
  12. If selected to program, will I be paid directly from the state agency or national organization?
    No. Summer Internship is managed by Synergy Enterprises, Inc. (SEI), a Maryland-based company that provides information technology and management consulting services to a steadily growing local, national, and international clientele in the public and private sectors.
  13. Can I apply to summer internship anytime?
    Applications will be accepted from eligible candidates from Monday, March 19, 2012, through Monday, May 7, 2012. The program is 10 weeks from June 11, 2012, through August 17, 2012.
  14. Do I need to be pursuing my Master's in Public Health to participate in Fellowship Program or Summer Internship?
    The summer internship accepts graduate students in schools of public, behavioral, and allied health.
  15. Do participants have the option to telecommute?
    Selected interns are required to be onsite. The option for telecommuting will be determined on a site-by-site basis, and will be left to the discretion of the assigned mentor.
  16. If I have a Student Visa, may I apply to programs?
    As the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration sponsors the summer internship, they require all applicants to be U.S. citizens or residents of U.S. Territories or Pacific Jurisdictions.
  17. What types of letters of recommendation are accepted?
    Applicants are required to obtain a minimum of two (2) academic and/or professional letters of recommendation.
  18. Are continuing education credit hours available for participating in fellowship and/or internship?
    The summer internship does not offer continuing education credits hours (CECH). We have a number of resources in which you may obtain CECH.
  19. I was just wondering if those who applied for the internship will be notified whether or not they are selected for an internship. Also, how will we be notified?
    All applicants will be notified whether or not they have selected to participate in the program. Applicants will be notified either by phone or via e-mail.
  20. When is the last day that I can apply?
    The deadline to apply for summer internship is by 11:59 p.m. (EST) Monday, May 7, 2012.
