PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Prachee J. Devadas, President/CEO
Strengthening Small Business
“As small business owners like Prachee… will tell you, we may be recovering but we’re not yet recovered. We have to keep moving forward.”
President Barack Obama
June 11, 2010
Historically, two out of three jobs in this country have been created by small business, so it is clear that small business has a big role to play in our nation’s economic recovery. Here at Synergy, we have been able to gather together more than a hundred talented people, who as individuals are supporting their families and pursuing their dreams, and who together as a company support the missions of our clients. After a very busy season of business development (still in progress), I hope to add to their numbersmaking Synergy’s particular contribution to the local economy and the nation’s recovery even stronger.
I was honored to meet with President Barack Obama in early June, to discuss the challenges facing small business and the ways that his administration can help create the conditions within which small businesses can thrive and grow once again. I was heartened to see his attentiveness to the issue and his recognition of the fact that a thriving small business sector is, in his words, “about more than just economic success. It’s also about who we are as a people. It’s about a nation where anybody who’s got a good idea and a willingness to work hard can succeed.” You can imagine how it touched my heart to hear him say, “That’s the central promise of America. It’s that promise that has drawn millions of people to our shores.”
That promise certainly brought me to these shores, and also many other people I am honored to work with here at Synergylike Aida, Alberto, Amara, Amiee, Deepa, Enid, Fiona, Gordana, Kiran, Luyin, Malika, Moses, Netina, Nhi, Ola, Prasad, Raj, Sandrine, Sippy, Sreedhar, and Uma. All of themand their native-born colleaguesbring their good ideas and willingness to work hard every day to strengthen this small business and to help keep the recovery moving forward.

SEI Senior Program Associate Kathy Zantal-Wiener Published in New Directions for Evaluation Journal
Kathy Zantal-Wiener, a senior program associate and director of the Student Drug-Testing Institute, authored an article proposing a comprehensive evaluation framework to prepare for evaluating school emergency management programs. “School emergency management is a new development, and so there is no comprehensive framework for evaluating school emergency management programs,” notes the article, which provides a sample logic model that can be adapted and tailored for use in local evaluations by any school district or school.
