As in other fields of medicine, a gap exists in the drug abuse treatment field between clinical practice and scientific research. This unique 2-day conference provides an opportunity for clinicians and researchers

Who Should Attend?

Drug treatment counselors, social workers, health care providers, criminal justice staff, marriage and family counselors, public health workers and clinicians who treat individuals with drug abuse or addiction problems, and researchers interested in drug abuse and addiction issues. Civic leaders and policymakers who wish to learn more about drug addiction and its treatment are also invited to attend.

As in other fields of medicine, a gap exists in the drug abuse treatment field between clinical practice and scientific research. Smart Practice, Practical Science: Blending Treatment and Research provides an important opportunity for clinicians and providers to interact with the developers of empirically supported treatments in skills building workshops focused on treatment implementation.

One important response to the gap in the drug abuse treatment field between clinical practice and research has been the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) National Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network (CTN), a research infrastructure currently consisting of 17 research "nodes" designed to test the effectiveness and usefulness of new and improved interventions in community-based treatment settings with diverse populations. The CTN is an important component of NIDA's overall goal to establish and maintain partnerships with drug abuse researchers and community treatment providers. The University of Miami is the site of the Florida Regional Node of NIDA's CTN.
