PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Prachee J. Devadas, President/CEO

With the holiday season approaching, SEI has many things to be thankful for and anticipate—being honored as a finalist at the 8th Annual GovCon awards ceremony, our multicultural Thanksgiving dinner featuring flavors as diverse as our staff, the smiles of So Others Might Eat's more than 50 children during our annual toy give-away, and the chance to celebrate accomplishments and recognize stellar staff during our annual holiday party. The last two months of the year are always filled with celebration and opportunities to give back, which we willingly embrace at SEI. I felt honored to be invited to the White House to witness the signing of the Obama Administration’s Small Business Jobs Act in September, which will help small businesses like SEI employ the nation’s workers and curb unemployment. SEI executives and staff are thankful to our new clients for trusting in our ability to offer innovative services, a trust that helped us secure more than five new contracts this summer and fall. We are also grateful for the chance to broaden our support of the nation’s efforts to prevent and treat mental health and substance abuse through two new contracts and three subcontracts with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SEI looks forward to ending 2010 and ushering in 2011 with new clients, new staff, and new ideas to meet our client’s ever-expanding needs.

NEW contracts

SEI to Help ED Develop Magnet School Technical Assistance Center

SEI was recently selected to establish a technical assistance center to provide ongoing mentoring, training, and guidance to address the management and project implementation needs of grantees in the U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Magnet School Assistance Program (MSAP). MSAP was developed to assist in the desegregation of public schools by supporting the elimination, reduction, and prevention of minority group isolation. MSAP grantees support the development and implementation of magnet schools that assist in the achievement of systemic reforms and provide all students with the opportunity to meet challenging academic content and student academic achievement standards. For at least 2 years, SEI communication, information technology, evaluation, and technical assistance staff members, along with experts in the area of magnet school education, will help ED’s Office of Innovation and Improvement to create new alternatives and technical assistance mechanisms to contribute to the improvement of educational practices within magnet schools.

SEI to Develop Program Implementation and Evaluation Guide for Language Instruction Educational Programs

SEI research and evaluation staff, and its subcontractor edCount, have undertaken ED’s Language Instruction Educational Programs (LIEPs): Lessons from the Research and Profiles of Promising Programs project. LIEPs refer to a systematic approach to the provision of services that supports the development of English language proficiency and academic achievement among English learners. This exploratory study will describe LIEPs characteristics that may influence the quality of programs delivered to English Learners (EL) in grades K through 12. The major purpose of this project is to gather data from the field that yields an initial portrait of well-designed and implemented LIEPs, and to provide practical guidance to local educators on selecting, designing, implementing, and evaluating LIEPs.  The study is scheduled for completion in September 2012.

Recent Achievements

GSA MOBIS Status Awarded to SEI

This month, SEI added the Mission-Oriented Business Integrated Services (MOBIS) program to its list of contract vehicles through the General Services Administration (GSA). This contracting mechanism for all federal government agencies enables streamlined procurement from prequalified contractors. Under MOBIS, government purchasers can place task orders with vendors at already negotiated labor prices, with no need to review and no justification requirements, thus reducing the number of days required for contracting to be completed.

Devadas Joins President Obama and Governor O’Malley at Historic Small Business Bill Signing
