SEI Wins Contract to Manage SAMHSA's Prevention Fellowship Program

SILVER SPRING, MD—In late September, Synergy Enterprises, Inc. (SEI) was selected by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) to contribute to the development and management of a highly trained public health workforce of prevention specialists. Through this Prevention Fellowship Program, fellows will complete Web-based and face-to-face training in areas such as communication, health education and promotion, epidemiology, social marketing, cultural competency, and other areas relevant for substance abuse prevention.
The Prevention Fellowship Program also will provide opportunities for participants to work with prevention services at the state level under the guidance of trained mentors, who will help fellows strengthen and apply knowledge gained from academic and work experience. This combination of training and work experience will help fellows prepare for the Certified Prevention Specialist Exam. Using a set of subject matter experts, and working in collaboration with state prevention agencies, SEI will help CSAP carry out this 2-year program.
Along with developing a marketing strategy to recruit potential fellows, SEI will review applications, select eligible fellows and mentors, and award 15 annual subcontracts to fellows in different localities. SEI will then follow through by monitoring the progress of fellowship activities, including the development of individual Fellowship Accomplishment Plans, which will be written by fellows with help from state mentors. SEI will also maintain a database of national and community partners, including representatives of health advocacy groups, state and local governments, and national family and community associations. SEI will prepare and disseminate database information and send quarterly e-mail announcements about new resources, materials, and other substance abuse prevention information.
Currently, senior program and research associates at SEI are planning the development of the Prevention Fellowship Program Web site, a program handbook, training schedule, and other aspects of the program.
