Who We Help
Synergy Enterprises, Inc.'s (SEI) corporate focus is on bringing innovative solutions to programs that advance public health and public education. Also, we are deeply committed to supporting organizations—in our neighborhood, our Nation, and across the world—that help people in need. We support civic associations and nonprofit organizations, and we serve as members on governing or advisory boards. We support Haitian debt relief, the livelihood of ill children and homeless families, innovations in substance abuse research, and the lives of paralyzed veterans.
So Others Might Eat, or S.O.M.E., is an interfaith, community-based organization that daily serves the poor and homeless population of Washington, DC by providing food, clothing, health care, and various life-enhancing services such as job training, addiction treatment, and counseling. The organization also offers meals, shelter, and rehabilitation services to the elderly.
SEI supports S.O.M.E. in various ways:
- Sponsoring two centers—the Thea Bowman House of NE Washington, DC, which is a transitional house, and Independence Place of SE Washington, DC, which provides permanent housing to homeless families. SEI supports more than 60 children through this sponsorship
- Delivering pizza every week to S.O.M.E. Place for Kids, the after-school program for children
- Providing school supplies (computers, books, backpacks, etc.) to ensure that the children have the resources to excel during the school year
- Donating clothing and shoes for adults in need of S.O.M.E.’s services
- Arranging skating events, face painting, moon bounce vendors, magic shows, beautification days, and game parties for the children of Independence Place
In 2007, S.O.M.E. provided 248,058 meals for hungry children, women, and men; 10,524 medical and dental care visits to homeless people who could not afford a doctor or dentist; 1,526 adults with individual and group counseling, case management, and continuing care; 120,699 meals for the residents of its rehabilitative programs, senior centers, and shelter for abused elderly; 535 homeless children, women, and men with safe permanent and long-term housing; and 51,336 hours of intensive job training to 111 homeless and extremely low-income women and men.
